Sunday Scaries: Why You Dread Monday: What Nobody in HR Will Tell You

It is Sunday evening. You have done nothing wrong. But your chest tightens. Your mind starts running through tomorrow’s meetings, emails, and tasks. The weekend is not over, but your body acts like it is.

The Sunday Scaries are not about Monday. They are about what Monday represents.

What the Sunday Scaries Actually Signal

Anxiety before the work week is not normal in the way people normalise it. A 2023 LinkedIn survey found that 66% of professionals experience Sunday anxiety.

The Sunday Scaries signal one of three things. Unresolved conflict at work. Misalignment between your role and your values. Or overload beyond your capacity.

Why Sunday Specifically

Sunday anxiety peaks between 4pm and 8pm in most studies. This is when your brain transitions from rest mode to planning mode. The shift activates your prefrontal cortex, which starts simulating the week ahead.

If the week ahead contains predictable stress, your brain fires the stress response before the stress arrives. This is anticipatory anxiety.

In the Gulf, this pattern intensifies. The Sunday-to-Thursday work week means the anxiety hits on Friday evening for many professionals.

The Diagnostic Questions

Is the dread about a specific person? If removing one individual from your Monday would eliminate the anxiety, the problem is relational.

Is the dread about the workload? The fix might be a conversation about priorities, not a resignation letter.

Is the dread about the work itself? This requires a bigger change.

Has the dread lasted more than three months? Short-term Sunday anxiety during a busy project is situational. Chronic Sunday anxiety is structural.

What Actually Reduces It

Prepare for Monday on Friday. Spend the last 30 minutes of your work week writing Monday’s priority list.

Create a Sunday evening boundary. A specific activity that signals the transition.

Name the specific source of dread. Vague anxiety amplifies. Specific anxiety can be addressed.

If the Sunday Scaries persist after you have addressed workload, relationships, and preparation, they are telling you something your rational mind has not accepted yet.

The Sunday Scaries are not a character flaw. They are data. Use them.
