Quick Answer

Normal private-sector working hours in the UAE are 8 hours per day or 48 hours per week. The official UAE Government page says overtime should not exceed two hours in one day, unless required under the applicable exceptions. Normal overtime is paid at normal hourly remuneration based on basic salary plus 25 percent. Overtime between 10 PM and 4 AM can increase to 50 percent, except for shift workers.

Normal Working Hours

The standard rule is 8 hours per day or 48 hours per week. During Ramadan, working hours are reduced by two hours each day.

Some sectors and categories can have different rules under the implementing regulations. That is why HR should check the role, sector, contract, and policy before giving a blanket answer.

Breaks And Working Time

A worker has the right to one or more breaks after five consecutive hours of work. These breaks must not be less than one hour in total and are not counted as working hours.

This matters in payroll. A long day at the workplace is not always the same as paid working time.

Overtime Pay Rates

  • Normal overtime: basic hourly remuneration plus 25 percent.
  • Night overtime between 10 PM and 4 AM: basic hourly remuneration plus 50 percent, except for shift workers.
  • Off-day work: substitute rest day or normal pay plus 50 percent of basic wage.
  • Official holiday work: another rest day or normal day wage plus at least 50 percent of basic wage.

The Two-Hour Limit

The official UAE Government page says the employer may ask a worker to work overtime provided the extra hours do not exceed two hours in one day, subject to the rules and exceptions.

That limit is there for a reason. Repeated excessive overtime can become a safety, performance, and compliance problem.

Common Payroll Mistakes

The first mistake is calculating overtime from total package instead of basic salary where the rule refers to basic wage or basic salary.

The second mistake is treating off-day work like normal overtime. The third mistake is forgetting that shift workers may be treated differently for night overtime.

What Employees Should Keep

  • Approved overtime request.
  • Timesheet or attendance record.
  • Roster showing normal rest days.
  • Payslip showing overtime line item.
  • Written approval for unusual hours.
